New console...what to get??

I'm gonna grab up a new console after the holidays. I'm having a hard time deciding which one to get.

PS3 - not sure I wanna spend this much, esp since I don't have an HD TV yet.

Xbox360 - most likely, since it has a lot of games, and it'll support most of my old xbox titles

Wii - too intriguing not to think about getting one. They're just badass, and I'm curious about the new style of gameplay.

ps3 - will have issues just like the 360 at launch due to pushing it out for xmas. not alot of games but is backward compatible with both the ps1 and ps2 games. online is free

360 - I hope you like shooters and racing games, because there's pretty much nothing else. Live is miles ahead of Sony and Nintendo's online offerings right now, and the HD movies are ramping up. Unfortunately, hard drive space is still limited with no way to upgrade. It's basically a PC any way you slice it.

PS3 - Wider variety of game genres, but their online service is still new. Sixaxis is gimmicky. Still, probably a good bet if your gaming tastes are all over the map. Downright miserable launch library.

Wii - Graphics are only a slight step up from Gamecube, barely noticeable improvement, but offers 480p (early GCs did too for supported games). Virtual Console offers genuine classic gaming (the games are unaltered) for a price. Online multiplayer is still not there yet, and if it's anything like the DS it lacks much of the functionality of Live. Controls are not at all gimmicky, and feel right when used on a game designed for that purpose. Limited launch library.


So far, I've had my Wii freeze on me twice while loading up a VC game (power/reset did nothing, had to unplug it), and my 360 has given me a disc read error playing GoW, but it elegantly just killed the game process and went back to the dashboard.

Having to update shit is not so bad, since it's usually pretty quick ... but this generation of consoles feels scarily closer to PC gaming than the previous generation did. I just want things to *work*.

I have a 360 and a Wii, no PS3 but I have a PS2. I may be a bit biased towards Nintendo because I really love some of their franchises, but I actually spent most of last gen playing nothing but PS2.

Also, be advised that if you plan on getting a total of 4 controllers, the 360 is currently more affordable than the Wii. 360 games average about $10 more apiece than Wii games, though.

Yeah, I couldn't believe the price. It wasn't marked and I just assumed it was $30 like most DS games. I thought the total was high when I checked out, so I checked the receipt, and it was $40. I double checked at a couple of other stores while we were shopping and it was the same price - the only DS game I've ever seen selling for over $30.

I don't mean the translation to the DS ... I meant the translation to Engrish. It's the only Final Fantasy that, until now, had not been released in the US. What we called Final Fantasy III was really Final Fantasy VI.

There were some fan-made translations of Final Fantasy III, but it sucked.
