BMW vs. MB

Bleh, I've resisted bringing this thread up several times today, but I'm finally gonna post it :( I have car fever and I know I'm going to make myself buy a car. My wife's Lumina has to go.

Originally I thought the new RL would be a shoo in, but the damned thing just ... I dunno ... sucks.

So I'm watching the new 330 and the C320 :wired: I'm also intrigued by the SLK350 Roadster, but once you add options to it it's probably well out of my price range.

When is the new 330 getting SMG? Opinions about fit/finish between BMW and MB? From what I can tell, the BMWs seem to have a sportier edge to them and the MBs are a bit more luxurious. Does the 330xi get SMG? It doesn't seem like BMW equates AWD with performance. :sqnteek:

^^ it appears to be an option on the 330Ci (coupe, conv) and 330i, but doesn't seem to have made its way to the 2006 330i yet.

Plus I wonder why it hasn't been an option for the 330xi.

You're thinking of the M3. -- which has the option of a SMG.

smg is very slick, with some added features like launch control (only worth it for the M3 tho) and the anti-rollback feature so you can move your foot from the brake to the accelerator without the car rolling back on a hill. very cool. and of course, being able to use it in auto mode is nice.

i've driven with it a few times, pretty easy to get used to. i just didn't like how the paddles don't rotate when you turn the steering wheel. they stay in the same place.

if you are looking at the 3 series, then the RL is a pretty different class of vehicle...

I can't see a person that has narrowed the playing field down to a couple cars, having the RL and 3 series together...
I'm not a big fan of the C class, so, between the C and the 3 series, I'd probably go BMW... if you threw in an E-class (320 due to price) into the mix, then I'd go Merc, but then you are looking at a class more in line with the RL, so seeing that I'm obviously biased to the larger sedan class, you may wanna take my opinions with a some grains of salt...

I am assuming that you are looking for a vehicle that sorta reflects your changing station in life? so, quite frankly, the 3 series may not cut it... depending on what you are gonna need it for... if it is truely just a leisure car, then I would totally be on it like flys on poo... love the car, I'd get SMG M3 convertible, E46 of course (don't like the newest 3 series... yet)... but if there will be some more utilitarian uses for the car at some point, then would consider compromises... like, four doors for more room to schlep clients... actually, I would move to the 5 series if that was a concern... the 3 is not a class you want to schelp people around IMO. you'ld probably be better off with a Toyota Avalon Limited... first off, it sounds silly, but, if you have bosses, you don't want to have a better car than them... even if you think the boss is okay with it... secondly, it gives you a chance to show them how sensible you are...

If you ARE the boss, you can drive whatever the hell you want... by the way, even if you are your own boss, if you have clients you might be in a situation where you should consider them your boss... example, one of my biz partners does pro bono work and thus has clients that are of considerably lesser means than he... he uses his commuter car, a 2002 Jetta, to visit with those clients... mind you, this guy makes well into the 6 figures but still considers it important to "dress the part" if you will. for him, it's a balance of looking too showy (and perhaps bringing too much unwanted attention) and possibly looking like a bad lawyer that couldn't afford a better car.

That's part of the reason why I had thrown the SLK350 into the mix, but unfortunately with options that sucker will run closer to $60k than $50k. :(

Yes, quality of the materials, fit and finish, the overall feel that the car is actually was put together with some thought and force rather than having parts "snap" together.

I looked at the new RL at the auto show and for a car that expensive, it still had a "plastic" feel to it.

The driving experience, in my opinion and again this is personal taste, is unmatched. The feel and balance of my 330 is amazing. It is one of those cars that you are eager to drive.

I love the German cars - don't get me wrong - I just don't think there's enough to distinguish them from the japanese lux cars nowadays - except for the super high dollar models.

Guess my point is lost. I just dont feel like the TL was built soild like a german car. The steering was loose, handling was sloppy and the doors were paper thin. I felt like i was gonna break the car when i closed it.

I could take apart the door panels on the TL with few screws. Taking a door panel off a german car takes almost two guys. I guess thats the best way that i can explain that.

I dunno, its hard to explain i guess. I just know the acura put a poor ivan in my mouth.

just wanted to add that I have to double shut the door on meh A4 quite a bit - never had to do that in the TL. ever.
also, my driver's seat squeaks - I can't fix it myself, and they can't replicate it in the shop. The TL had the sunroof squeak that was fixed quickly and painlessly - so you can see where I'm coming from.

i hate the doors on the TL. every once in a while, i have to lower the window, open the door and pull in the top of the frame of the door because you can hear the door seals making a sticky vibrating sound. once i pull it in, it goes away. it liks every time you close the doors, it bends it ouwards which causes it to vibrate and shit :furious:

the new RL is a nice car, but alot fo technology in that puppy to go wrong. The only issue that i know of is that the AWD locks up and takes a shit. Local dealer has replaced 4 tranny's already. other than that, its a great car. a little too small for my taste, but nice nonetheless. But then again, its still an acura
