right now on www.espn.com, these are 4 of the Headlines:

"The Whole Truth" (article about Palmerio using steroids)

"Redskins' Taylor doesn't fear possibility of jail" (Sean Taylor threatened someone with a gun)

"Koren Robinson checks himself into alcohol rehab" (obvious subject)

"Daly suing Florida newspaper for defamation" (article stating he beats women)

I'm sure there's more...but how fucked up is it that we pay these guys millions of dollars??

d00dy does all 4 of those things and no one even cares! :dunno:

So then there could be the other side of the argument with regards to the rest of the population....Take the entire population of people who work in sports (players, coaches, media, etc.) and compare them to another industry, such as empoyees of restaurants, real estate agents, or even fortune 500 companies and I bet they would have just as many shady characters facing legal issues. Its not that people involved in sports are overly sleazy, its people in general, and its probably always been this way only the media coverage is just much more intense these days.

So, because they make more money they should be expected to behave better? Most, or nearly all, athletes, musicians, etc. are first generation rich people and are representative of the general population. They shouldn't be expected to have a whole new value system included in their contract. Things are not getting worse they are becoming more publicized. If Koren Robinson didn't play football he would be like hundreds of thousands of others entering Chemical dependancy programs that we have never heard of.

btw - I expect people to behave correctly, period. But the truth is, that for the $ these guys make, they are going to get more publicity/scrutinity. Thats just the way it works and part of the deal. Right or wrong - it's the truth. :dunno:

1. "Irony" is not the key lesson here..."hubris: is

2. I still laugh when I see how naive the sporting media and sporting public is. TONS of guys have been using steroids in baseball (and every other sport) since the 70s. Mot of those guys are like Palmeiro...they use them for some added strength, not size, and to give them more fortitude through the long summer months.

3. The money at stake for these guys is all the incentive you need to take steroids. I know guys now who take far more damagind amounts of steroids for no other reason than to "get big". Same goes for the dozen or so guys I played football with in high school...none ofthem were destined for football fame and fortune, roids or not...they just did it to help them play better.

That's the motto of any endeavor in which one wishes to best an opponent. Hell, in Scrabble tournaments my Great Aunt used to go to, they had to use plastic tiles rather than wood because too many people would "Braille" the tiles in the bag to find the blanks or other key letters.
