I guess my issue is twofold.

Movies - Sounds simplistic, but a DVD can be played at home, in a car with a DVD player, on a PC, on a personal DVD player. With the PSP you have to buy movies on a media that can only be played on a PSP.

Games - Same issue, in that PS games can only be played on PSPs and not the PS2 game console, but I guess it's no different than Nintendo Gameboy and DS games not being played on the Gamecube.

Are the games better?

You can play Gameboy games on a Gamecube with a $30 adapter, but I never saw the point of it. :dunno:

<--------- PSP with firmware version 1.50, which is > *

With that firmware version you can.....ahem....."acquire" games on teh Intraweb net to play off the memory stick. Also, you can watch movies off the memory stick. So I can record movies off HBO/Showtime on my Replay TV, transfer them to my PC and then convert them to MPEG-4 format for the PSP. It works quite well. Too well in fact--Sony's newer firmware versions disable both features so you have to buy the UMDs for games and movies. Almost all the new units have the new firmware, and in a really bad twist Sony is now not only requiring the firmware to play some of the newer games, but is making those games *automatically* install the new firmware when you first put the UMD in the PSP, without any action required on your part.

But I do love my unit. :mhihi: :hay:

Would you recommend purchasing one? Even with the new firmware?

I honestly have no time for portable gaming. :dunno: What would be the point if you don't travel and are not stuck in airports, or whatever.

oh, if the person will use it - then go right ahead. Then again - a DS might be bettar since they have the wifi network and some of the DS games are badass.

After all the crap they've been doing with copy protection, I may never buy another Sony product ever. Don't get me wrong - I HATE pirating and have railed against it for years, but the measures they keep coming up with to thwart the pirating really does nothing other than make things a pain for the law abiding customers.

I guess it depends on what you want it for. It sounds like you want it mostly for movies, and as long as you don't mind shelling out the $$$ for the UMDs then it is a great portable player. For me, I used mine mostly for watching my recorded TV shows at work, which was awesome. But now we have DVD drives at all of our workstations so I can download my shows to my PC and copy the MPGs to a DVD and watch them on a 19" LCD as opposed to the PSP. But I still use the PSP for gaming (I'm hooked on the Untold Legends RPG).

If you're content with buying a few games here and there (or better yet, buy them used on eBay and save $$$$), and movies then the PSP is a great unit. Plus you can throw pictures and MP3s on it and use it as a portable MP3 player and photo viewer to boot.

PSP has WiFi as well, and you can always find time for some portable gaming on the shitter.

Ipod Shuffle is pretty damn cool. It's big as my... I mean big as a pack of gum but holds around 120 songs. 240 if you get the 1GB. Now I don't have to listen to Afrika Bambaata at the gym.

Everyone still using their PSP? I'm up to firmware 2.71SE-B which lets me play a crapload of games now. I've got over 130. Ace Combat X, Skies of Deception has been occupying a lot of my time now. That, plus Exit, NASCAR 06 and Untold Legends--The Warrior's Code :run:

The kids still have them and play quite a bit. Downloaded the latest firmware as well.

Still trying to figure out how to link it to the PS3. Tried a few weeks ago, but was having some issues, haven't really taken the time to figure it out since then.

Can you just run CSOs/ISOs out of the ISO directory like you can with 2.71SE-B?

Are you running any version of devhook? I don't want to mess with that--I just want to run ISOs.
